Our Chapter's Local Activities

The Berkeley /North East Bay serves the Bay Area cities of Berkeley, Albany, Crockett, El Cerrito, El Sobrante, Hercules, Kensington, Pinole, Rodeo, San Pablo in Northern California.

We now have two task forces that are reaching out on the issues of immigration and police practices. The goals here are to serve the needs of those people who are affected by governmental policies in these areas, establish contacts with other persons and groups with the same concerns, and increase chapter member involvement in these efforts. The efforts planned are those with the greatest effects for those who need our services – educational (media presentations, lectures, panel discussions), legislative activism (lobbying, local government expressions, public consciousness raising), and coalition building to expand and energize the efforts in these areas.

The Chapter meets every third Wednesday of the month at the Sweet Basil Thai Restaurant in Berkeley.

We also maintain this website to provide readily accessible civil rights information to the public.

Annual Events

  • We hold an annual meeting open to all 4,400+ chapter members. We also participate in the ACLU of Northern California Bill of Rights fundraising, soliciting contributions from our membership and attending the annual Bill of Rights Day in San Francisco.

Community Issues In Which We Have Been Recently Involved:

  • We recently held an Immigration Reform panel discussion, assisted in phone banks for No on Prop 85, and held a salon/dicussion on Real ID.

  • And - too many times to mention - appeared on televised public access TV; appeared on local TV news and radio; provided opinion pieces and comments in the local papers; wrote letters to the editor and members of Congress on civil liberties issues; and manned ACLU literature tables and/or represented the ACLU at local events.
